There are basically four types of water heaters available. The residential standard models replace older water heaters that vent into your chimney, most of the time with your furnace. These are the least energy efficient models, and current federal tax incentives, make it a great time to upgrade. You know you have this model if the venting material is made from steel or aluminum. Next are the Rheem Pro Series models. These also are a metal vent water heater, but are slightly more energy efficient and come with longer warranties. See the Rheem Pro Series water heaters below. Next are the power vent water heaters. These typically have a plastic vent that exits directly out the side of your home. These are also more energy efficient models that have been installed more recently. The 90% and 96% efficient AO Smith Vertex Models qualify for Federal Tax Rebates totaling 30% of the installed price, up to $1500. With rebates these heaters are now affordable, and out perform all other power vented water heaters. Last are the tank less models. They can be configured to meet almost every need. Navien now offers a condensing Tankless Water Heater that is 98% efficient and can be vented over 100' with 3" PVC pipe and fittings and also qualify for the $1500.00 federal tax credit. These heaters also feature built in re-circ pumps and mini buffer tanks, effectivily elliminating the "cold water sandwich" associated with most tankless water heaters.
